Coronado's Church: History & Anecdotes.



This beautiful neo-Gothic's style church is an architectural monument of past generations. The priest Ruben Fernandez, gave to the architect Teodoro Quirós the preparation of the layout for the new church. The architect make the layout for 4000 colones, but the community paid him 3600 colones ($ 6.50 approx.), because mr. Teodoro didn´t gave the layout on time.

The church was inspired in the French Gothic style.The layout of the Church was sent to Krupp Company in Germany, to be approved by the German engineers and ask them for the budget of the metal structure for the temple.

The pay was Cash and without discount was to be paid in advance 30% of the commission and the rest . On February of 1929 was reported to people that on Sunday February 17, 1929 would be made a big party called "turno" for the benefit of building the new church.

The people with the party had it $11000 for the 30% of the account. In Augost was cancel the rest 70%.

Once it became known that the structure of the Church was already in Puntarenas, they proceeded to make arrangements to be moved by train to the Plaza Viquez was emptied. The townspeople were organized to move it on the road. The "Boyeros" got their wagons and carriages built resisting the bringing of that heavy material, part of it was brought from Puntarenas.


The clock was given by Jose Trinidad Mora. The bells were ordered home to France Les Fils de Georges Paccard.

In the part of front of the church there is a considerable number of pinnacles and six niches in which are images of San Pedro and San Pablo and the four evangelists. In the portals Angeles are six in each of the doors, as well as a string of archangels in the top of each entry arches. At the top of their doors south and north is a high relief of Christ on Calvary and the birth of the Messiah, this laborious work was done by the craftsman Rigoberto González Solano.
